A ritual in the sacred Kiso forest: ceremonial katana balm made from rare woods, temple incense, leather Bushi armor. At the beginning, cedar and Sawara false cypress surprise with a spicy-lemony accord that impresses with resinous clarity. However, the angularity of the fragrance quickly sets in, and it becomes rounder, softer, darker. Deep notes of dark woods paired with warm leather and the dry sweetness of iris. A fragrance with a strong character that needs to prove nothing and yet presents itself with volume. Subtle enough not to overwhelm, yet distinctly refined and unusual – this is how Amber Kiso fills space and spirit.

Top notes: Japanese Cedar, Sawara False Cypress, Incense  Heart notes: Japanese Maple, Patchouli, Iris Base notes: Hinoki, Leather, Oakmoss

Behind the Fragrance

Japanese forests contain numerous trees with wood that is sacred in traditional religious ceremonies. The connection to the forest is realized in ritual offerings that include incense made from these rare woods. Hinoki wood’s strong timber has been used for temples, Noh theaters, baths, and masu. Hinoki from the Kiso forest was sourced for the holy Ise shrine in Mie Prefecture. Sawara Cypress is a sturdy lemon-scented 'false' cypress with red stringy bark. The timber is also used for temples and shrines. It grows wild on the islands of Kyushu and Honshu. Asahi zuru maple is an ancient variety of maple native to Japan with beautifully ornate pink, white, and green leaves. Its name means 'swan at dawn'.

D.S. & Durga

D.S. & Durga is a Brooklyn-based brand whose fragrances tell stories that transport you to distant places. Each fragrance is a fragment of half-remembered myths of pioneers, boundary crossers, and cowboys, imaginary landscapes, salons, and workbenches that invite exploration. According to the founders, the art of a perfume lies not only in quality but also in the handling of the individual components. D.S. stands for David Seth Moltz, who taught himself how to make perfume. He lives his passion of transforming musical and literary spaces into fragrances. This also means that each individual fragrance is conceived and constructed in-house by D.S. & Durga, that is, without intermediaries or interpretation by external perfumers. Kavi (aka Durga) designs everything around the fragrances. By thinking in angles, light, shadow, and texture, she creates clarity in form and function. Through this constellation, everything the couple loves about music, art, nature, and design is elaborately told in aromatic form. All fragrances are invisible soundtracks that can be worn on the body throughout the day. The more you know the stories and events, the deeper you dive into the world of the bottle. The story, unexpected and novel combinations are the core of the aromatic vision.
