What makes a good winter fragrance? What are the typical scents? And how do I find the perfect fragrance for winter? Here we answer all these questions
First of all: What exactly is a winter fragrance and how does it differ from summer fragrances?
Many people don't know that our body heat is responsible for how long a perfume lasts. Body heat ensures that the perfume spreads better and evaporates faster. This is why light, fresh scents that we normally associate with spring and summer are usually less noticeable when worn in winter.
Winter is therefore perfect for wearing spicy, heavy or sweet scents.
Many people look for warm and cozy scents this season to combat the cold winter . Additionally, many people tend to gravitate toward scents that are reminiscent of winter festivities. These can be sweet, smoky, warm and/or spicy scents that they associate with fires, baked goods, sweet treats or warm, spiced beverages. These scents often evoke certain feelings and emotions associated with this special time.
All this leads to Winter sees an increased use of warm, spicy, sweet and woody notes that are often not present in summer fragrances. This gives perfumers more freedom in creating fragrances, as the cold of winter can erase hard edges, while the stronger notes can also hide certain "imperfections" in the balance of ingredients, resulting in a more diverse range of fragrances.
When creating a fresher, lighter perfume, the balance of ingredients is much more noticeable and therefore more important for the perfumer to consider.
While summer scents are often meant to be refreshing and not overpowering on the skin to balance out the high humidity and heat of summer, winter scents are often richer, more intense and soothing and need not be afraid to envelop the wearer.
The main differences between summer and winter fragrances are therefore the notes , the characteristics – such as refreshing vs. cozy – and the longevity .
Summer fragrances are light, refreshing and often contain citrus or aquatic notes that develop well in the heat but also fade more quickly.
Winter scents are rich and soothing, with notes like amber and wood that linger longer in cold air and provide a cozy, enveloping warmth. These notes are usually found in the base notes, the strongest and longest-lasting section of a fragrance.

Petit Gourmand – Fragrance Box
Lieferzeit 1-3 Werktage
Petit Gourmand is the box for those with a little olfactory sweet tooth. At first glance, the untrained nose might suspect a dessert menu rather than perfumes. But here we are in the midst of the depths of the niche perfume spectrum. These gourmand fragrances are creations that made it their mission to capture the world-famous refrigerator scene from the film "9 ½ Weeks", between Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke, in a bottle of perfume, so to speak.
Imagine an etagere on which the finest tonka beans, mature vanilla and various coffee specialities are lined up in a circle next to classic warm-sweet fragrances such as amber and musk. The other levels are filled with sweet and fresh teas, Belgian waffles, syrup cupcakes, lemon tarts and cinnamon biscuits. All these delicacies are just waiting to be arranged by perfume artists, who also seem to have pâtissier/pâtissière skills, in an arrangement that enchants not only the palate but above all the nose.
Fragrance Family: Gourmand
We’ve included a special for you: Every Fragrance Box includes a 5 Euro voucher towards a perfume from our shop :-)
What is a fragrance box?
This fragrance box is a collection, curated by us, of thematically compatible perfumes. This is meant to ease your process of finding that one perfume that sweeps you off your feet, without having to spend all day studying each and every scent we offer. As we find it impossible to narrow it down to only 5 scents per topic, the exact constellation of the box will not always be the same and will change according to the mood and preferences of our Fragrance Team.
Are you looking for the perfect winter fragrance for you? These factors can play a role
The three main factors that play a role in choosing a perfume are: fragrance concentration , fragrance direction and your own skin chemistry (here you will find everything you need to know about fragrance concentration, as well as everything about skin chemistry and general perfume selection).
Fragrance Concentration
If you choose a perfume with a higher fragrance oil concentration in winter, such as Eau de Parfum or Extrait de Parfum, the fragrance experience is improved by better sillage (fragrance radiation) and longevity ( you can find more information on fragrance concentration on this page ).
Cold weather slows down the evaporation of perfume, which can make lighter and lower concentration scents less noticeable and short-lived. Higher concentrations contain more fragrance oils, so the scent stays on the skin longer and is noticeable through multiple layers of winter clothing.
Fragrance Characteristics
Look for warm, spicy and cozy fragrance families like amber, woody, spicy and gourmand. These categories include notes like vanilla, amber, cinnamon and sandalwood, which exude warmth and comfort. Heavier notes are particularly good as they linger and can cut through the cool winter air to create a welcoming aura that beautifully complements the atmosphere of the season.
Gourmand scents with caramel or tonka bean can provide a feeling of pampering, while spicy or woody scents with cardamom or pine add a sophisticated, layered depth that's wonderful for winter.
Skin Chemistry
Before choosing a fragrance, test how it reacts to your skin , as this will affect its longevity and scent profile (if you're interested in this topic, you can find more info on skin chemistry here). Apply the perfume to pulse points and leave it on for at least an hour. Different skin types enhance or weaken certain notes; for example, warmer skin may enhance spicy notes, while drier skin absorbs lighter notes quickly. Trying out fragrances in store or with samples can help you find the perfect scent for your body chemistry and the season (find everything you need to know about our perfume samples here).
Doesn't sound like you?
If you find that a winter scent doesn't suit you, you can of course still wear a summery perfume. Maybe you have a favorite scent that doesn't fit the classic winter scents, but you can't imagine giving it up during this season? That's fine, of course, because spraying it on might remind you of the warmer days of summer, even in the middle of the cold days of winter.
