For thousands of years, camels have transported salt and gold along the Azalai - an ancient caravan route through the Ténéré region in the Sahara Desert. Along the route stood a single acacia tree simply called the "Tree of the Ténéré" - the only living thing in an ocean of sand and often referred to as the most isolated tree in the world - 150 km from any other. This tree is the last surviving plant from a time when the desert was less parched than it is today, thanks to its deep roots that reach more than 30 meters into the earth. A sacred testament to the resilience of life that guided caravans for centuries before it was sadly killed by a drunk truck driver in 1973. Azalai is a tribute to this tragedy and all that this magical tree stood for. The fragrance, as a sensual reinterpretation of luxury, begins with an olfactory impression of gold, with the radiant warmth of saffron and blood orange and the glossy, luxurious musk Velvione - a material that has been described as like pressing your nose to the scalp of a newborn baby. Acacia gum, a syrup made from acacia sap, provides sugary sweetness balanced by salty amber and incense. Hints of mint tea and dried fruit pay homage to the Tuareg caravan riders, themselves specialists in desert survival, who held the tree and its amazing resilience in high esteem and considered it blasphemy to break its branches for firewood or let camels eat from the leaves.

Behind the Fragrance

The Azalai is a caravan route through the Ténéré region of the Saharan desert where camel trains have transported salt and gold for a thousand years. Along the route stood one single acacia tree, the only living thing in an ocean of sand. This was the most isolated tree in the world, 150 km from any other. This acacia, known simply as The Tree of Ténéré, was the last surviving plant from a time when the desert was less parched than it is today, thanks to roots reaching deep down into a water pocket, an underground pool hidden more than 30 meters below the desert. It's easy to see how the Tuareg caravan riders, themselves desert survival specialists, held the tree and its amazing fortitude in highest regard. Breaking its branches for firewood or letting the camels eat from the leaves were considered blasphemy. This loneliest tree in the world was one of very few landmarks along the Azalai, a sacred testament to the resilience of life, that had guided caravans for centuries. In spite of this, and the fact that it was the only obstacle for miles around, a truck driver that had drunkenly fallen asleep behind the wheel crashed into it in 1973, and killed it.

Stora Skuggan

Stora Skuggan is a niche perfume brand from Sweden, founded in 2015. The brand is run by a small group of perfumers and designers. All work is performed at the Stora Skuggan fragrance studio or lab in Stockholm by hand – composing and producing the fragrances, creating the artwork and packaging. Stora Skuggan perfumes are based on stories that blur the line between myth and reality. Central to the brand, these tales are conceptualized through scent and art, creating a small universe for each product. Scent is a way of communicating, telling stories and experiencing them. Their unique way to combine extraordinary scents makes every fragrance art - from the process of making to the first use. The difference from a mass market perfumer is that they will use the right materials, regardless of their cost. Cutting corners by using cheap substitutes of expensive oils only makes sense if you're planning to sell millions of units what is not their focus. Stora Skuggan want to keep on doing what they do without thinking too much about what happens in the perfume industry. That might come off as ignorant, but the goal has always been to stay autonomous because it’s the best approach to creating unique fragrances.
