They are the opposite of so-called mainstream perfumes, without being unsuitable for the masses per se. In addition, they are usually smaller fragrance houses that are brave enough to experiment and for whom the composition and not sales are the main focus. In many cases, the perfumes are still filled by hand and perfumers can pursue their passion and work freely without fear of creating something "uncommercial".

The microcosm of niche perfumes
We know it from our everyday life as a perfume shop: we are looking for a perfume that is individual and outside the mainstream, but at the same time is not so crazy that you can't wear it. It shouldn't just smell nice, but be something very special. It should complete the person wearing it olfactorily. Be individual, like your own signature and make a (loud or quiet) statement.
Some of the perfumes are subtle and close to you. Others run ahead with a rumble and rush into every room, making it unmistakably clear who has just appeared. But they all have one thing in common: they are small, delicate works of art that you take to your heart and that soon become part of you. If you smell them on another person, you are almost outraged. "These are my memories, that is my feeling, that is me!"
What defines niche perfumes?
Niche fragrances are a fascinating part of the perfume world that lies outside the mass market. But what makes them so special?
Creative formulations
While conventional perfumes often target mass preferences, niche fragrances are an expression of the individual visions of perfumers. Creativity and exclusivity are the top principles. These perfumes are often produced in small factories, in limited editions and are only available in selected shops.
High-quality ingredients
To emphasize their uniqueness, niche perfumes use more unusual scents and therefore more special ingredients/ingredient combinations. The production of the usually expensive fragrance oils is complex, so only selected ingredients are used. Examples of these are oud, amber, ambrette, pistachio, orris root, papyrus. In contrast, conventional perfumes often contain more affordable, everyday essences.
Complex fragrance compositions
Niche fragrances are characterized by their unconventional scent facets. Instead of the traditional top, middle and base notes, they have more distinctive and multifaceted scent nuances. The formula also requires a higher concentration of fragrance oils, which results in more intense and higher quality scents. All of these factors explain why niche fragrances are usually a bit more expensive than their mainstream counterparts.

Although niche fragrances focus on something special, they offer a wide range of options. Even though we are convinced that gender categories no longer have to play a role in perfumes today, there are still many fragrances and fragrance compositions in the niche perfume sector that are associated with the classic views of gender.
