In perfumery, its roots are used rather than its long stems. The essential oil is therefore extracted from the rhizomes by distillation. Incredibly, the essences from Réunion and Java smell very different from one another! The characteristics of the surrounding land directly influence their facets. A Javanese vetiver is smokier and greener, while Haitian vetiver has overtones of grapefruit, making it more bitter. The Réunion kind is the rarest; its notes are crystalclear and characteristic of vetiver: fresh, slightly spicy, woody and earthy. It is a distinguished base note that completes a creation.
