The perfumery and the art collective Fischersund presents five blooming fragrances called Faux Flora. They transport you to a world of conceptual botany that explores the intersection of natural and synthetic. A sensory representation of the life cycle of a plant, depicted through human milestones, exhibited and premiered as an exhibition at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle. The life cycle of a plant – germination, growth, flowering, seed formation, and seed dispersal – is thus overlapped with the life cycle of a human – birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and death. Faux Flora springs from universal experiences and creates mythical flowers that are otherworldly yet familiar.
With this Discovery Set of handcrafted and hand-poured flacons containing the fragrances showcased in the exhibition, one can explore each phase of Faux Flora. Accompanying this is a limited edition of cards featuring artworks by co-founder and creative director Ingibjörg Birgisdottir, as well as fragrant poems that guide you through each scent.

Behind the Fragrance

Transport yourself through scent, sound and art starting November 8th 2024 as The National Nordic Museum unveils Fischersund: Faux Flora, an immersive multimedia exhibition integrating scent, sound, sculpture, 3D-graphics, and photography.   As featured in The New York Times, The Fischersund Art Collective’s first-ever museum show draws upon the multidisciplinary artistic talents of co-founding siblings Jónsi (our nose), Inga, Lilja, and Sigurrós.

Faux Flora invents new plant species and is a sensorial display of human existence shown through the lens of plants. The plant life cycle—germination, growth, flowering, seed formation, and dispersal—is superimposed on the life cycle of a human—birth, childhood, adolescence, maturity, and old age.

Faux Flora will open on November 8th with a sold-out scented concert, in which The Fischersund Music Collective will perform and incorporate ethereal visuals with olfactive experiences. An encore sold-out scent concert will also take place on November 10th. For additional insight into their collaborative artmaking, the Museum is presenting a panel discussion featuring the siblings on November 9th.

To encourage exploration of the exhibition and its themes, the Museum has organized exhibition-related talks. On December 5, leading researcher Dr. Venkatesh Murthy, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Director of the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University, will talk with co-founder Lilja Birgisdottir about the connections between scent, memory, and emotion.

Fischersund

Fischersund was founded in 2017 and is a family-run perfumery and an art collective that utilizes the creative expression of siblings Jónsi (of the celebrated post-rock band Sigur Rós and a self-trained nose), Lilja, lngibjörg, Sigurrós, and their partners Sindri and Kjartan Holm. The brand identity comes to life in the main store in downtown Reykjavík (Fischersund 3 – Sigur Rós's original recording studio) through artisanal fragrances, custom music, and ethereal visual and fine arts. The brothers Birgir and Hreiðar, who lived next door to each other in the 70s, wanted to realize their children's crazy ideas and incorporate all their hobbies and interests into the family business. Fischersund focuses primarily on the connection between music and scent, exploring the fleeting nature of smell and sound by intertwining their inexplicably strong and immediate effects, evoking emotions and taking one on a journey. The heart of the brand is artisanal perfumery using high-quality Icelandic oils, which are hand-filled and sustainably packaged in Iceland. Since scent and sound evoke memories and tell stories, each perfume transports through a harmonious composition of nostalgia, poetry, and music. Fischersund sells perfume products inspired by the pure, unique nature of Iceland. In doing so, herbs and oils harvested from the Icelandic wilderness are used, employing the most environmentally friendly solutions and materials for modern living.
